So let's talk about what every single business out there needs to have in order to build long-term, sustainable success: an email list.
I can tell you from my own experience, that creating email list has been truly powerful and has completely transformed my business. When I relaunched my business back in 2016, I had ZERO people on my email list. I didn't know anything about email marketing at all. I had no clue that it existed or that it was something important and it's something that I slowly uncovered on my own.
While building a business through referrals can be powerful, the truth is that it is completely inconsistent and unpredictable. On the other hand, being able to grow your own audience is something that, when done correctly, can totally change the game for you.
Email lists on the other hand are completely under your control - and more important than the list is what you use it for. For you it might be about boosting sales or about building a connection with your audience (it should, actually, be about both). Whatever it is, you definitely want to start building that email list fast. So, we are going to uncover 4 reasons why building an email list will bring you clients.
I created THE most incredible guide showing you the 4 most powerful was to grow your list and find new clients. Make sure you download it right here for free (btw - this is SO good, I should probably charge for it).
reason #1: sales funnels are powerful af
Let's get real here for a minute. It's not that email lists on their own are powerful, it's actually ALL about what you do with them that's powerful. So, let's start with basics here and talk about what a sales funnel actually is.
Here's the deal, while it would be nice if we could go around randomly asking people to simply buy from us completely out of the blue, that's not exactly how the world works.
We have to SHOW people that they can trust us and that we potentially have an answer to their problem and that's exactly what a sales funnel is for.
So, the way that a funnel works is that you take them through a process of KNOW > LIKE > TRUST. So let's break these down.
Build Awareness
Building awareness is all about getting your message out in front of the right people. You do this by showing up and giving your ideal customer value in a way that allows them to, well, know who you are and what you do. It's a pretty straight forward process.
So, whether it means that people read your blog posts because they found you through Pinterest. Or, they saw an Instagram post you put out and they found out about who you are, that's were it all begins.
But the thing is, in order to TRULY create the like and trust factor, you need to give your ideal audience free value in a way that they can put it to use or that you can prove how to solve their problem.
That's where the next part comes in. If people found you by chance, it's highly unlikely that they will see you again, so creating an opt-in/freebie/lead magnet is how you move people in through your funnel.
Generate engagement
Once people have gained awareness about who you are, your job is to generate engagement through the free resources or valuable information you have given them.
So they opt-in to whatever it is that you created for them (pdf, checklist, webinar, video series, quiz, etc) and they use your information which, naturally, starts to create a closer relationship with your audience.
In this guide I give you about 6 ideas of freebies you can create plus 4 ways to grow your list and find ideal clients.
You want this content to be really powerful and good so that once they start using it, you begin growing that LIKE factor even more. You need to make sure that this piece of content is so good, they will willingly give you their email in order to download it. This has been a REALLY powerful thing I have personally used in order to grow my own email list.
Honestly, if you look around my site there are over 20 guides and workbooks, about 5 webinars, an email course, a quiz and a couple of challenges/bootcamp. I take this stuff seriously.
Anyways, people opt-in to your email and you deliver incredible and powerful content and from there you build trust.
Build trust
The last part of the funnel comes from finally being able to generate trust with your audience. Now, this is a little bit trickier because it requires you stepping up and consistently showing your audience that you know what their problem is and that you can help them.
You do this by emailing your list while at the same time you show your authority and continue to prove to them that you know exactly what they need in order to solve their problem. You use social proof (if possible) to show them that you have done this in the past and you build likability by being authentic and showing who you are.
It is through the trust that you build that you are capable of transforming that cold, unaware audience, into people who are ready to buy from you.
These 3 powerful steps are the ones you need in place in order to use your email list in your favor and transform them into paying clients. This is what makes an email list THE most powerful of all.
reason #2: it has a higher conversion rate
I'm gonna be honest with you here, pretty much EVERY single one of my clients have been people that are on my email list. Sure, occasionally I get clients who came in through referrals that have no clue about me beyond what their kind friend told me, but almost EVERYONE has been on my list.
Here's the thing, I might not check my Instagram every single day, but you can bet every single morning, after I send my daughter to school, I'm in my computer opening Gmail to see what's new.
This means I will be much more likely to find out about your product or service if you are emailing me and telling me about it, than if you were to randomly share it on your Instagram once a week.
The other thing I have noticed is that people on my email list tend to be super engaged. They like what I'm sharing, the open things up and they reply back to the things I am asking them. This allows me to create content that's better suited to their needs - which is pretty cool.
A higher conversion rate means that more people are likely to convert into buyers when they are on your list, than if they were people that simply knew about you or followed you online.
And of course, in business, conversion rates matter. Plus, eventually, this becomes a simple science. If you know that 10% of the people that come into your email list buy X product, you need to focus on getting more people into the funnel in order to generate a larger income. You can get as specific as you want to with it.
In the guide I created I am showing you 4 powerful ways you can grow your email list and get more people into your funnel. Make sure you download it here.
reason #3: you get to build a relationship
The truth is that one of the most powerful reasons to grow your email list is being able to build a genuinely powerful relationship with your audience.
At the end of the day, it's through your constant emails that you can share more about who you are and what your story is.
Listen, we forget sometimes when we are in business, but we are human! At the end of the day, people will want to buy from you if they see you as a real person that's just like them and that gets where they are.
I find this to be particularly powerful. I have never hired anyone that I didn't connect with on some level and I'm pretty sure every single one of my clients has resonated with things I have shared either through emails or through my community.
There are 3 ways you can build a relationship with your audience through emails:
Share who you are and the behind the scenes of your life
This means that you openly share more about your story, your personality, your struggles and successes. For me, personally, this usually converts really well - and to be honest, I don't write these types of emails for conversion purposes only.
Sometimes I just want to share my story. I want to share who I am and what's on my mind. I want to inspire other people with my life. This TOTALLY happened to me for example when I shared this email (which I later turned into a Facebook post) talking about how I had made $60k in the last 30 days despite all of these things that were going on in my life. That email alone generated over 24 people booking a call to find out more about what I do. TWENTY FOUR! Pretty darn insane, right?
Share success stories and results
To be honest, this is actually one of my ABSOLUTE favorite thing to do. When people get in my email sequence, one of the most powerful things I use to build more trust is send a LOT of emails showing example after example of success stories.
I talk about how clients go from making 0 to $25k a month in their businesses. I talk about how someone signed their first $10k client. I talk about how a weight loss coach made over $20k in 2 weeks.
I share it all. Why? First of all - damn I'm proud of my clients and proud of myself for leading them there.
Second - dude, it's an amazing way to show people what can happen to them when they work with me (yes, I just used dude in a sentence).
I take people through the whole case study showing them where there people were before working with me and what we did together to get them that amazing result.
Any time you can bring social proof and results in your emails, it means you are allowing people to see what's possible for them and it for sure raises your credibility.
Let your audience know when something comes out
This is probably the most obvious way to establish a relationship with your audience - you let them know when something new is coming it.
Essentially what this means is that anytime you launch a course, a program, a brand new freebie, a spot on your 1:1 service/program, or whatever it is that you are launching, you email your list.
It's an incredible way to stay in touch with them and give them plenty of opportunities to become your clients. Remember when I said that an email list will give you a higher conversion rate? Yeah, that is dependent on you giving people on your list the opportunity to buy from you - consistently.
So, yes, you are giving value. Of course, you are sharing your personal stories. Without a doubt you are sharing your client wins and success stories. But, behind all of that is a powerful and clear Call to Action.
This Call to Action is what tells them exactly what it is you want them to do next. Pretty simple.
reason #4: you have control
The last reason why you need to build an email list in order to bring in new ideal clients is that you actually have control over your email list.
Here's the thing, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (and any other social media you use), they are a business. Meaning that they are looking for their own ways to monetize your use of it. Now, don't get mad, they are TOTALLY in their right, after all, it is their platform. They have the right to change the algorithm and hide as many posts of yours as they decide to hide. Why? Because they want you to pay in order to get in front of your friends or followers.
You my friend have zero control over that. While you can spend all the time in the world creating and sharing wonderful posts, you don't have any control if Facebook decides to show it to your people (unless you are paying and even THAT is limited).
But, your email list? That is something YOU control. You decide how many and when you will send emails out to your list. Nothing will stop you from that.
Now, of course, it doesn't mean EVERYONE is going to open your emails, but it definitely means that, no matter what, you are getting into these peoples' inbox for them to then make a decision. With social media you don't even know if anyone will ever see what you post.
Makes sense?
So, by now you GET why building your email list is the best thing you can do for your business - even if you don't have a clue about what to sell just yet. I would recommend starting your email list and focusing on growing it and creating GREAT content for it ASAP.
